The bass step in the hip hop styles: hear it both ways
This follows your Lo fi note ("notes are clashing a lot in this song"). The clash there was a bass note held right beside a note of the chord. The same kind of step was then counted in every style. It turns up in the bass lines of the hip hop styles: the bass steps up one note, holds it for a beat, and comes back home. On paper it is the same kind of note you called a clash in Lo fi. Here it sits very low, under an 808, and nobody can say without ears whether it clashes down there. So here it is both ways, and you choose.
Pair 1: West Coast (the clearer pair)
The first 50 seconds of one West Coast track at 88, bass sound "Rubber mini". Every other note is the same in both. The step comes at 15, 20, 26, 31, 37 and 42 seconds.
The bass steps off the chord and holds there for 0.7 of a second
The same step for 0.35 of a second, then straight back home
The same two with the bass by itself, so the step is easy to find:
Pair 2: Memphis
The first 50 seconds of one Memphis track at 66, bass sound "808 glide". The step comes at 13, 20, 28, 35 and 42 seconds. This is the harder pair to tell apart: the 808 slides slowly into each note, so the cut is from about 1 second to 0.7.
The 808 slides up one note and sits there for about a second before it comes home
It sits there for 0.7 of a second and is home sooner
The bass by itself:
For comparison: Trap, left as it is
The first 50 seconds of one Trap track at 159, bass sound "808 deep". At 17, 23, 29, 35 and 41 seconds the 808 starts one note below home and slides up into it. That lean in from below is written on purpose and is not being changed. It is here so you can hear it beside the step in the two pairs.
Nothing to compare: this one stays
What I need from you
Two answers, by ear, on the request itself:
| Question | What happens |
|---|---|
| Shorten the step in the hip hop styles? | Yes: the step is cut to half a beat in the Memphis, Dirty South, West Coast and Jazz rap bass lines, live the same day. No: they stay as they are |
| If yes, the same for Trap and Trip hop? | Their bass lines have the same step. They belong to another builder, who gets a request only if you say yes |
